Last gasp winner in five-goal thriller

By Ira Devibar

Brunel Men’s Hockey second team netted a last minute winner to snatch a victory against Portsmouth in an exciting and thrilling BUCs Wednesday encounter

When Portsmouth made their journey from the south coast all the way to West London, little did they know what the afternoon would have in store.

Brunel were eager to bounce back from their humiliating 8-1 loss at Roehampton in the previous game. However, almost straight away the home team found themselves behind to the travelling side. As the game progressed, Brunel upped their game and increased the intensity by creating chances, but couldn’t quite finish them off.

Finally, luck went Brunel’s way after breaking through to grab an equaliser. And the team’s hard work paid off once more after putting themselves into the lead not long after the equaliser was scored.

But the drama did not stop there. A misplaced back pass allowed Portsmouth an opportunity to get back into the game; a chance they took.

Sitting toe-to-toe on level terms, both teams battled their way to get the win in what became a fierce contest.

In the dying embers of the game, all hope seemed lost as the Portsmouth defence managed to block Brunel’s short corner. But in a dramatic game, Brunel kept their determination all the way through to the last seconds, pouncing to score into the empty goal from a last gasp rebound to salvage the victory.

A blockbuster of a match that truly displayed the excitement and buzz around Team Brunel’s BUCS Wednesdays.
